When God Says …
“Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off: and many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.” (John 11:18-19 KJV).
We can feel, together with the company of the Lord and the disciples, that we are in the midst of people in the state of mourning. The presence of many comforting the sisters Mary and Martha, tells so much about their prominence in the area. And many of those are religious Jews, no doubt from Jerusalem, who may have come not just to comfort the sisters. Bethany is just fifteen furlongs (around two miles) from Jerusalem the center of religion. Some may be fully aware that these sisters are beloved friends of the Lord and are coming to watch what miracle He would do in this unfortunate time. Some could be spies and agents of those leaders of the Lord's religious enemies, who plan to corner and arrest Him.
With the presence of genuine mourners, who are four days deep into their mourning, there is no doubt that Lazarus is truly dead and decomposing. The sizable crowd present is a great setting for a wondrous manifestation of the Father's glorious affirmation of the divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ. Looking back the event's unfolding, from the time the sisters sent their message to the Lord, we can see that the Lord Jesus Christ purposely delayed His response to the summons He received. And knowing that the Lord is faithful, He stands by the promise He sent to Mary and Martha, upon hearing that Lazarus was sick. It is written: “But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”” (John 11:4 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
