When God Says …
“Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him. Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.” (John 12:1-3 KJV)
These passages open the setting again in the village of the newly resurrected dead man Lazarus and his sisters. On His way to attend the Passover celebration in Jerusalem, the Lord Jesus Christ stopped by Bethany to spend quality time with His beloved friends for the last time. He was given a party reception at the house of Simon the leper and are enjoying a meal together, as also described in Matthew 26:6-13 and Mark 14:3-9. This was Martha's forte who loves to serve and always takes the helm in the kitchen, these passages imply. While Lazarus sits at the table with the Lord. Mary, with her devotion to the Lord, as in other instances in Luke 10:39 and John 11:32, fell at the feet of the Lord Jesus with a pound of costly perfume held in her hand. She anoints His feet and wiped it with her hair.
Having observed the selfless devotion and costly generosity of Mary, remind us of One in the Scriptures whose gift is vastly more extravagant beyond measure. The Apostle Paul described that Person and the fragrant aroma of His gift filling the home of those who believed in Him. It is written: “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.” (Ephesians 1:7-14 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
