“And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades.” (Luke 10:15 ESV).
Capernaum was a flourishing commercial city in Galilee where the Lord Jesus spent time to reside and performed many of His miracles. They experienced heavenly works of the Lord in their midst. It was a place where the Lord Jesus performed numerous healing and teaching, and yet most of the people there did not believe in Him. In Matthew 11:23-24, the Lord Jesus laments their unbelief and pronounces its sad consequence on the day of judgment, saying that Capernaum will be brought down to Hades.
This pronouncement on Capernaum serves as a warning to those who reject Him and His message. The people of Capernaum had witnessed the Lord’s miraculous works and heard His message of the Gospel of the Grace of God (Acts 20:24), yet they chose not to believe in Him. Their unbelief is ultimately what led them to the path of judgment. This serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of rejecting the Lord Jesus and the Gospel of the New Covenant of Grace.
The Lord Jesus did not execute judgement to condemn Capernaum. He came not to condemn but to save. His declaration is a lamentation of the path the city has chosen to reject Him. They opted to go the way of self-condemnation, being made aware that rejection and not believing in God’s only begotten Son is a self-inflected act of eternal ramification. It is written: “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.” (John 3:17-18 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
