“And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.” (Luke 10:31 KJV).
Continuing on His parable of a traveling man beaten by thieves and lying wounded on the roadside, the Lord Jesus tells in this passage that another traveler - a priest, chanced on and saw the wounded man. This priest, probably one of those religious Jews, displaying an attitude of no regard, just look past the wounded man who may also be a Jew from Jerusalem, he just walk around to avoid the languishing man and continue on his travel. Cruel and heartless it is, we may surmise. But, wait! Isn’t that what and how most people behave? Or, even perhaps you and I maybe, when faced with such situation? Fearful, we find countless of reasons not to get involve in someone else’s affairs.
We are in no position to judge this priest. You and I to some degree are guilty of the same! By our own self effort to do good, we lack the power to manifest as such, no matter how hard we try, as much as we can, on our own merit and strength. Even as we feel we fulfill some expectations, we always fail to meet the full and perfect standards of the demands of the law. The law is holy beyond our grasp. We fall from God’s glory (Romans 3:23). We are separated from Him because of sin. Hence, we needed the Holy One to rescue us and bring us back to a place we should be - in God’s grace!
This is therefore a pop up alert for us. It is not by religious priestly position we gain pleasure with God. It is not by trying hard to observe the law, but by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and in His sacrificial death and in His resurrection and life. Scriptures affirm: “For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.” (Romans 5:10-11 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
