When God Says …
“And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.” (Luke 10:7 KJV).
By this instruction, the Lord Jesus gives the disciples, and us that follow them, a boost of encouragement to receive God's supply through the generosity of others without guilt. He reminds, by comparing to a labor's worthy fare, that His provision for the ministry of His Words is an assured fruit of sowing, not a wage, not a debt or charity. The Lord's instruction in this passage is in context with divine provision through resting in grace by faith in Christ's finished work, rather than striving by self-effort to earn. This means total reliance on the Lord’s unmerited favor, rather than our own work.
This gives us a preview of the story of Mary and Martha in the upcoming account of Luke in this chapter. In one of the Lord's visit to teach in their home, Mary rests and chooses the "one thing that is needful" —sitting at the Lord's feet to receive His Word—over Martha's striving and being "troubled about many things" (Luke 10:38-42). We too should choose to rest in grace while allowing the flow of the Lord's Living Words through us as we navigate town after town entering to stay in one house at a time, until we move on.
In these passages, God assures us that as we go to deliver the message from heaven about the Kingdom of God, He takes care for all our needs. We depend on no one but Him. Yes, He can and will use anyone we encounter on the way, in the house we choose to enter and stay. We will be provided and fed. The Lord even uses the ravens to supply food to the prophet Elijah. Let us therefore be assured to remember the Word of God to Elijah, as it is written: “And the word of the Lord came to him: “Depart from here and turn eastward and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. You shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.”” (1 Kings 17:2-4 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
