“Behold, I have given unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” (Luke 10:19 KJV).
This passage brings back memories of my childhood days. One instance, when I was around seven or eight years old, I was bitten on my check by my uncle’s dog that I surprised on while nursing its critters. Dogs are so protective of their puppies, and I did scare it. So, it bit me. I was never medically treated for it. It did not hurt me. It even did not leave a scar on my beautiful (joke) face. We just put our raw trust in God. Some say it’s luck that the dog was not rabid. But now, looking back, I believe it’s God’s grace. In another instance, when I was around 11 or 12 years old, while running on my way to school with only flip flops on, I stepped on a snake which bit my ankle. I was never treated medically for it, as well. We did not have easy access to medical resources. All we have was raw trust in God. My parents didn’t even know of it, until the man who happen to help me rub the wound with some leaves, told them about the incident.
It amazes me to recall those incidents reflecting on this passage now, knowing that the Lord Jesus gives us authority over toxic and venomous critters in this world. We just need to trust in Him. At that time I did not know of this Word of the Lord. All I have was trust in God. I know that the God my parents mentioned is real, though not the way they knew Him. With thanks to the Lord, ultimately in the later years of their lives, they encountered the true God of the Bible by letting go the god of religion. Through the holy and written Words of the true God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob who sent His only begotten Son, they encountered Christ Jesus our Lord.
It is very reassuring for us, being God’s children in Christ Jesus, to have His pronouncement that nothing can harm us in this world as we rest in the cover of His grace. In Christ Jesus, we have these prophetic Words pointing to the Lord Jesus in whom we depend on to cover us: “Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place— the Most High, who is my refuge— no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone. You will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot. “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”” (Psalm 91:9-16 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
