“And he said to them, “I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.” (Luke 10:18 KJV).
This passage affirms that Satan is a defeated foe, and has lost his dominion and power. The Lord is telling the seventy plus disciples who just returned from their mission and who are rejoicing that demons submitted to them, that they should not be surprised because Satan's power was already broken. The Lord’s description: “Satan fall like lightning from heaven”, points to the fall, which happened before the temptation in the Garden of Eden. The Lord Jesus is reaffirming that believers can look forward to have His given authority over the enemy through His finished work on the cross.
The Lord’s vision was of an event that had already occurred as written in Isaiah 14:12. The "fall like lightning" emphasizes the swift and decisive nature of Satan's judgment and expulsion from his original place in heaven. This defeat is to be sealed by the Lord’s accomplished work of sacrifice on the cross. The sin inflicted by Satan on humanity has now been gotten rid off by the Lord’s death and resurrection.
Now, as children of God by faith in Christ Jesus, like the apostles and the seventy plus disciples, we should not fear Satan or evil spirits, but rather walk in the authority we are given by the Lord Jesus Christ. In grace, free from the old shackles of the law, we have the assurance: “The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:56-57 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
