When God Says …
“And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.” (Luke 10:32 KJV).
In this teaching of the Lord Jesus about grace versus the law, responding to the religious lawyer’s question: who is my neighbor?, He continues the parable with a Levite also traveling on the same road. Following the Priest, the Levite also stumbled on the injured traveler. (In the old covenant of the law, Levites who are direct descendants of Levi’s tribe were chosen for special role to support the Priest). He too avoided the badly wounded man and went on his way, as the Priest did.
We just watched two religious figures showing their inadequacy to respond the demands of the law that they zealously espouse. Their failure demonstrates that the holiness of the law is much too high for any man to fulfill. Yet, religion perpetuates this, adding their watered down doctrines, rules and rituals. As these Jewish religious Priest and Levite did, and this present day’s religious enterprises are promoting, gives them away with their hypocrisy.
The Priest and the Levite, represent religious systems and law-keeping. And they failed bigly to help the man because the Law is given to expose sin, and not to empower a truly righteous living (Romans 3:20). Instead of the law's demands or condemnation, as the Lord's redeemed, we - all believers should focus on God's constant supply of grace for every day living. Grace enables us to manifest its fruit by faith in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Our part therefore is to simply "take" and "receive" righteousness from God in faith by grace (Galatians 3:11), not by trying hard to earn His favor through works. Lest it won’t be grace no more. It is only by faith alone that pleases God and lets Him be God in our lives. Let us be reminded, it is written: “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
