When God Says …
“Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:20 KJV).
In this passage, the Lord Jesus is giving the seventy plus disciples and us a very important reminder. While it's a good moment for joy to have power in this physical realm over evil spirits, theirs and our true lasting joy and security should come from knowing that our names are recorded in heaven (in the "Book of Life"). The Lord Jesus is redirecting our focus to salvation and intimate, personal relationship with God through Him, not just the temporary spiritual successes or abilities. It is a call to keep our eyes locked on our eternal identity and God's love, rather than worldly or even momentary spiritual achievement.
The Lord Jesus affirms their given power, but redirects their celebration beyond the physical realm to the foundational truth of their eternal standing with God. That’s the truth that lasts beyond their earthly ministry successes. It is a shift of purpose from the outward physical signs of power (submission of spirits) to the inmost reality of being chosen and loved by God.
With our names written in heaven is God's promise of love and eternal life, and our inclusion in His everlasting kingdom, a far greater blessing than any earthly manifestation of power. Having been saved by His grace through believing in Him, the Lord Jesus is pointing us to the book of life that records the work of God we have done (John 6:29). This book will be opened at the great white throne. It is written, as revealed through Apostle John the beloved: “And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done.” (Revelation 20:12 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
