“He hath put down the mighty from their seats, And exalted them of low degree.” (Luke 1:52 KJV).
This verse from the song of Marry continues to declare her heart’s worship for the good news of her being favored as a vessel to give birth to the Only Begotten Son of God. Mary’s utterance reveals heaven’s way in contrast to the world. God’s power coming down from heaven overturned the system of the world. The mighty shall be pulled down from their positions of authority and control, while the humble and the lowly will be exalted. This highlights God’s Kingdom rule of grace, truth and love.
Mary is expressing her gratitude and praise in her song to God for choosing her, a humble and lowly servant, to bear the Messiah. In doing so, she acknowledges the power and sovereignty of God in actively transforming the social order of the world - raising up the marginalized and oppressed. This, Isaiah describes pointing to a future leader, [now in this moment is revealed and identified as the Lord Jesus Christ to be born through Mary], who will be anointed by the Spirit of the Lord to proclaim good news to the poor, heal the brokenhearted, and set the captives free (Isaiah 61:1).
Apostle Paul also affirmed in his exhortation: “But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”” (1 Corinthians 1:27-31 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
