“But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.” (Luke 2:19-20 KJV).
These verses reveal Mary's inner thoughts and emotions following the miraculous birth of the Lord Jesus Christ and the shepherds' surprise visit. The shepherds came to witness at the stable the newborn Messiah, shared with Mary and Joseph what they had seen and heard from heavenly hosts. These passages capture Mary's reaction to the shepherds' testimony by keeping to herself what has just transpired.
This divine moment started to unfold as the shepherds were out in the fields that eventful night, watching over their flocks. An angel of the Lord appeared to them announcing the birth of the Savior. This was a momentous occasion, as it signaled the fulfillment of the long-awaited promise of the Messiah who would bring salvation to the world. The shepherds were given a sign to identify the baby Jesus, who was lying in a manger in Bethlehem. When they found him, they were filled with awe and wonder at the sight, just as the angel had said.
They returned to the fields tending their flocks from seeing the newborn Savior, filled with overwhelming joy and a deep sense of gratitude towards God. Their response was not just one of quiet reflection, but one of outward celebration and praise. They couldn't contain their joy and their awe at what they had witnessed, and they glorified and praised God for the things they had heard and seen.
The shepherds recognize this truth, which the apostle Paul affirms in his exhortation to the believers in Rome, which we should, as well. This is a warning to the way ward souls and a reminder to us who rest in grace by faith in Christ Jesus. “For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.” (Romans 1:20-25 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
