When God Says …
“And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.” (Luke 2:21 KJV).
The verse emphatically confirms the circumcision of the Child who was now named Jesus as the angel told Mary, an Abrahamic covenant requirement for all Jewish males on the eighth day after their birth. This is a covenant act of obedience by the Jewish people, as handed down from their fathers. Obedience to God’s command is prevalent in this verse. It demonstrates that the Lord Jesus, the Son of God, who was born under the law was subject to the covenant and law of God given to their fathers. This affirms the importance of His adherence to Old Testament commands and laws of the Jewish people. He came to fulfill the law that they - the covenant people, and all humankind couldn’t. This theme of obedience resonates throughout the New Testament, urging believers to live by faith and total dependence in the One who is the person of grace and truth, our Lord Jesus Christ.
The naming of the child Jesus is an important aspect of this passage. The name means "savior" or "God saves." It was revealed by the angel Gabriel to Mary during his visit. This carries great significance as it underscores the Lord’s purpose and mission on earth being the Messiah and Savior of mankind.
This, therefore, serves as our reminder for the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies and the establishment of the Lord’s humanity and mission on earth. It also sets for His ultimate death and resurrection to save us all. ““For God so loved the world, that he gave His only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 ESV).
