“But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.” (Luke 6:49 KJV).
The Lord Jesus speaks about the importance of hearing and following His Words, as well as the consequences of not doing so. He uses the analogy of building a house to illustrate the importance of establishing one's life on a solid foundation. In this text, He continues His metaphor of the consequence of not living by what we hear from His Words.
He contrasts two types of hearers: those who hear and put it to practice, and those who hear but do nothing or do other ways. The former are likened to a person who builds a strong house on a rock, while the latter are likened to a person who builds a house on the sand, which falls in the first rush of a flood. This emphasizes that true discipleship involves not just hearing the Lord’s words but also practicing them in daily living.
This passage therefore warns every person, wise enough to understand, that building a life on the rock (abiding in His Words) provides a solid foundation for weathering the storms of life. While building a house on the sand (disregard and rejection of His Words) will lead to destruction, of great magnitude. The ruin of that house is enormous! This vivid imagery of a flood vehemently beating a house built on sand, illustrates the spiritual consequences of not building one's life on a solid foundation by putting to practice the Lord’s teachings of grace and truth (John 1:17). Children of God in Christ, let us therefore hear and know as the Psalmist declares: “He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction.” (Psalm 107:20 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
