“But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet. This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.” (Luke 7:26-27 KJV).
In these passages, the Lord Jesus affirms John the Baptizer, leading a life as humble as he was. The Lord Jesus exalted and praised him as a prophet greater than any other. He fulfills the prophecy of a messenger preparing the way for the Messiah, as prophesied in Malachi 3:1. This praise accorded by the Lord on John is in contrast with the hard hearts of the crowds and the religious leaders who rejected John the Baptist and his message. Hence, the Lord Jesus challenges the crowds to account for whether they're seeking a reed shaken by the wind or a noble man of luxury, rather than a prophet who speaks with divine authority and living a life in austerity.
Yes, the Lord Jesus Christ confirms that John the Baptist is the anticipated messenger who precedes Him, and prepares the way for Him. He affirms to the crowds and to us now reflecting on these passages that He is come, in fulfillment of the prophecy of His coming. To you and I, these remind us that we are now welcome to enter His grace for an intimate relationship with Him - our Lord Jesus Christ, by faith. And indeed, we are! Being children of the Highest, having been born again by faith in Christ Jesus, we now belong to Him.
He, who was in the beginning was the Word, has come in human form to hang out with us! He moved into our midst. The Scriptures proclaim to us this truth very clearly: “The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood. We saw the glory with our own eyes, the one-of-a-kind glory, like Father, like Son, Generous inside and out, true from start to finish. John pointed him out and called, “This is the One! The One I told you was coming after me but in fact was ahead of me. He has always been ahead of me, has always had the first word.”” (John 1:14-15 MSG).
And I say, AMEN!
