When God Says …
“Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum.” (Luke 7:1 KJV).
This verse shows us that the Lord Jesus made a deliberate transition after He delivered His Sermon on the Plain as “He entered into Capernaum.” This city in Hebrew means ‘village of comfort.’ This is a center of convergence by many visitors of deferent status, background and ethnicity. This is the commerce hub on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee. Entering into this city, the Lord Jesus shifted significantly from the mountain side and rural setting to the diverse and crowded streets of the city.
Capernaum represents the world in its false sense of vain comfort, which the Lord Jesus came to save. By entering the city, He is entering symbolically into the world, taking on the sins and suffering of humanity. This symbolizes the Lord's willingness to be present with us in our unfiltered circumstances and state of messed up lives - seeming to enjoy the falsity of comfort in a world of vanity, to offer us hope and healing.
Yes, that’s where we’re at without the saving grace of Christ Jesus. But now, in Christ by His grace, we are privileged to rest on being born again by faith in Him. Because the Lord Jesus entered Capernaum, we can now truly enter our true ‘village of comfort.’ Scriptures say: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
