When God Says …
“And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat.” (Luke 7:36 KJV).
This passage sets the stage for a profound and powerful convergence between the Lord Jesus Christ and two other contrasting individuals. This takes place at the house of a Pharisee, a member of the Jewish religious group, who invited the Lord Jesus to dine with him. The Pharisees were widely known for their zeal of adherence to the letter of their law and their self-righteousness, often looking down on those they considered to be sinners.
But, the Lord Jesus Christ has no issue accepting the invitations of Pharisees, as it is His mission to bring the Gospel of the grace of God to every soul. His being with the status of a Pharisee’s guest does not mean He will be subservient to the host. In one instance it's revealed He dined with the tax collector named Levi (Matthew 9:10-12). The Pharisees criticized Him for eating with cultural outcasts and religious offenders. Yet our Lord Jesus Christ dismissed them by saying, "I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance" (Luke 5:29–32). Ironically, even when the Lord is reclining at the home of a Pharisee, a sinner finds Him (Luke 7:37). It should not be surprising even to a Pharisee when the "sick" finds the "Physician" to seek healing (Luke 5:31).
This should be a subtle reminder for us to note that our Lord, Savior and Healer is very available always for us to come to Him with no restriction. We can come to His presence as we are - authentic and with no make over, even when He is reclining at the table to ‘meat’ or to dine. And, we will receive what we come for. It is written: “And great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them, so that the crowd wondered, when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel.” (Matthew 15:30-31 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
