When God Says …
“Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.” (Luke 10:3 KJV).
Reflecting on this passage through the lens of grace, the Lord's finished work on the cross, and having receive God's power through faith, we are alerted to be sent as sheep among wolves. We are not sent counting about our strength, but about relying on the Holy Spirit who is within us. It is in the comfort that we are made righteous by faith in Christ, which allows the Holy Spirit to dwell within us, and His power is what enables the Lord’s early disciples and us to be a "sacrificial, suffering witness" of His message that the Kingdom of God is come.
In the eyes of the world, with our meekness, we're like sheep sent among pack of wolves. We go not relying on our own strength, but on God's grace. Our dependence on the Lord’s grace is the "unshakable foundation of Mount Zion" -representing the New Covenant of Grace in Christ (Hebrews 12:18-24) rather than the "shaky ground of work in self-effort of the law” - represented by Mount Sinai where the law was given through God’s servant Moses (Exodus 31:18).
With the Holy Spirit in us, we are made righteous through faith in the sacrifice, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. This indwelling power of the Holy Spirit, that we receive by faith in Him, is what enables us to face the "wolves". When the Lord said, to you and I, who believes and rest in His grace "I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves," in a way that emphasizes that though we are vulnerable, we are sent out by our Lord Jesus Christ to witness through faith, with the assurance that He is with us, shielding us and providing for us.
We have God’s enduring and reassuring promise as it is written: “But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.” (Isaiah 43:1-3a ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
