The Gospel of Luke 5:31-32 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” (Luke 5:31-32 KJV).

No one else except the Lord Jesus Christ had ever walked on this planet without sin. All have sinned and are born sinners through the DNA of Adam (Romans 5:12). These passages provide the Lord’s response to the self-righteous question of the religious Pharisees and their scribes - the legal experts who interpret their religious laws, to the Lord's disciples: “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” (Luke 5:30b NIV). Their religious spirit of self-righteousness in their hearts numbed them from realizing that their action is despicable in God’s sight.

Using the doctor-patient relationship as metaphor, the Lord “Jesus answered them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do.” (Luke 5:31 NLT). As a doctor would to a sick person, the Lord Jesus Christ conveys the word that He positions in the proximity of sinners for their immediate access to repent and be forgiven. It is such a simple illustration for people of physical perspective to understand. People of carnal mindset often plan their setting up of residency in the proximity of modern healthcare facilities and services. Fixated to a world corrupted by sin, they always assume and anticipate to be sick. They prepare for easy access to medical services.

Hence, this analogy for sinners should have been easy for the religious priests and worldly Jews to grasp on. God is so near to come to and be forgiven. We only need to come in His presence, as we are by faith dependent on His grace. And He will declare as He did to the paralytic man. You and I, we are assured. It is written: “And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.”” (Matthew 9:2 ESV).

And I say, AMEN!
