When God Says …
“But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.” (Luke 6:35 KJV).
This passage calls for a radical and countercultural response to those who may harm or mistreat us in this world. It challenges us to love, not just those who may not love us in return, but those that are against us - to destroy us. We are called on to love those who are actively pursuing to harm and reject us. We are to act with generosity, kindness and love, even with those who are ungrateful and wicked. This turns upside down the norms of the world that places the enemy on its right spot - an enemy! It is that spot wherein any action that it takes against a person, that other person is expected to respond overwhelmingly - “tit for tat”. In the world, the enemy must be routed and vanquished.
For you and I who are born again in Christ Jesus, manifesting this virtue of love reveals our identity as children of the Highest, for He who is our Father is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. We lend to lend with no repayment plan. This is God’s way for us to convert material things to things spiritual. Things that can be seen are transformed into things unseen. The material things that are finite are made into things infinite. Things that don’t last are made lasting unto eternity by lending to lend, not expecting anything back. Yet, not expecting for it, a great eternal reward is made ready for us, by grace, not by merit!
This is, therefore, how we save treasures in heaven! As it is written: ““Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.” (Matthew 6:19-20 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
