When God Says …
“But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth. Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?” (Luke 6:8-9 KJV).
The Lord Jesus being God omniscient, knows their thoughts! He knows this people’s application of the Sabbath law is based on their own interpretation of the law, not as God provided the law to Moses. They give their own specific definition of work. The Mosaic law, itself, isn't nearly so specific. The Lord Jesus knows the heart of God. God gave Israel the Sabbath as a blessing of rest. He did not intend for the Sabbath to be used to hurt or even to forgo doing good to one another. "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath" (Mark 2:27). If a person can save a life on the Sabbath—which the Pharisees agreed to—a person can surely heal an ailment (Luke 6:9).
The Lord demonstrates the heart of God's law is grace, love and mercy, not rigid adherence to rules and regulations based on warped man-made doctrines. The Sabbath was meant to be a blessing. But the religious Pharisees turned the Sabbath into a burden rather than a blessing. The Lord’s words serve as a reminder that true righteousness is not found in outward display of observance in self-effort, but in the spirit-led motives and intentions of the heart by faith. The Sabbath, like all aspects of our relationship with the Lord is to bring us to rest with God, as genuine and authentic expression of our faith. Scriptures declare: “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
