The Gospel of Luke 6:3-4 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him; how he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?” (Luke 6:3-4 KJV).

In these passages, we reflect on the Lord’s response to the confrontative questioning by some Pharisees who are shadowing them - the Lord Jesus and His disciples, watching their every move. The Lord and His disciples were walking through a cornfield one Sabbath day. The disciples are challenged by the religious leaders for picking grain, considered unlawful to do on Sabbath according their rules. In response, the Lord Jesus refers them to an incident in the Old Testament about David and his companions who were hungry. They ate the consecrated bread from the tabernacle, which were only allotted for the priests to eat according to the law (1 Samuel 21:1-6). The Lord highlights the preferential leniency to human needs over observance of the religious ritual rules. Noting that Sabbath is a time of rest and worship in the presence of God, but the religious priests loaded it with burdensome rules, which these fanatics that confront them are zealous to enforce.

The Lord drawing their attention to the incident with David and his group eating the consecrated bread which was a clear deviation from the established law about the bread intended only for the priests, He is reminding them and us that what matters more is not the rule. It is God’s grace that matters. We are to seek the heart of God as David did. Grace is superior than the rules and the law (Galatians 3:15-22). The law came by Moses - a servant. Grace came by Jesus Christ the only Son of God (John 1:16). And, He is in their presence and our presence too, as we give Him Lordship over us by faith.

As David did, let us therefore seek after God’s heart! It is written, God testified about David after He removed Saul as Israel’s king: “And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, ‘I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.’ Of this man’s offspring God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised.” (Acts 13:22-23 ESV).

And I say, AMEN!
