When God Says …
“And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.” (Luke 6:31 KJV)..
This passage bears the fundamental principle that teaches us to treat others the way we want to be treated by them. Many in the world borrowed this timeless principle that has been echoed through the ages in various cultures and religions as the “golden rule.” In this passage, the Lord urges His disciples and by extension, we - the present day believers, to adopt a mindset of selflessness and compassion in our interactions with people around us. The message to treat others as we would want to be treated is an overarching theme in the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ while He was in the flesh among humanity. He emphasized under His covenant of the gospel of the grace of God (Acts 20:24) the core essence of love, kindness, and forgiveness in our relationships with folks in our vicinity, especially those in our immediate proximity. It prompts us to manifest from within us, by the unction of the Holy Spirit, bearing with one another, compassion, enduring each others deficiencies and generosity in our dealings with the humanity that the Lord Jesus came to die for. We are to love all whom the Lord Jesus loved.
The reciprocity core of this teaching of the Lord Jesus challenged the disciples, the crowd gathered around them and us now reflecting on this passage, to treat others with the same honor and respect that we ourselves desire. This is such a very high level of virtue to meet with, and no doubt there is no person can manifest this by His own effort, except the Person of Grace - our Lord Jesus Christ. Only in Him and through Him this can manifest through us like fruit from within. Not by trying hard to follow religious dos and don'ts. Only by total dependence upon the Lord Jesus by grace through faith, like a branch attached to the vine. As it is written, the Lord Jesus says: “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
