“Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.” (Luke 6:25 KJV).
This verse, in the Lord's continuing Sermon in the Plain, laid bare a very important truth and warming. He is using the satiated and hungry, and the laugher and mourning analogy to highlight a sobering prospect of reversal of fortunes. In earlier passages, we watched the Lord Jesus sought to mingle with the sinners as profiled by religion. They are deprived and boxed by religion and the world in this realm of living. They’re people just like you and I before we were covered and washed clean by the spotless blood of the Lamb of God by faith in Christ Jesus. That is if we are honest about it, and we do. We’re born into sin (Psalm 51:5), the reason we needed a Savior in Christ Jesus our Lord. He is the only One who can save sinners. And, He released us from shackles of deprivation by religion and the world.
He entered into a personal relationship with them and us - to love, to redeem, and then to welcome them and us into God's family. He enjoyed partying with them, the lowly. That’s with those who are sinners, yet humble to be saved. We watched it at the banquet that Levi, also called Matthew, threw to introduce his "sinful friends" to the Lord Jesus Christ. He talked about God's joyous party for returning sinners. The lost souls that were found! Yes, He found us and now we banquet and rejoice in His presence. And, as Apostle Paul testifies: "And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus."(Philippians 4:19 NIV).
The Lord Jesus would have no part with the arrogant self righteous and grumpy religious Jewish priests. They often display that self-satisfied posture, as if saying: “look-what-I've-done”. Their arrogance care less if anyone else is unhappy or mistreated. This shallow satisfaction cannot survive the hardships of life and the permanence of death. It is a vain attempt to escape from the hollowness of life without the Savior. Sorrow, awful hunger, and mourning await those who live such a life apart from grace, in Christ Jesus.
Apostle Paul, testifies of God’s reassuring provision of grace. It is written: “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” (2 Corinthians 12:9 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
