“And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for your's is the kingdom of God.” (Luke 6:20 KJV).
This passage is the first core teaching of the Lord’s “Sermon on the Plain” after He and His disciples descended from the mountain. This, He addressed to His newly chosen Apostles and His large crowd of disciples in the presence and hearing of the great multitude of people seeking for healing. These multitudes come from all over Judea and Jerusalem and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon. These group of people are not all Jews, having in the mix gentiles from Tyre and Sidon in the region of Syria and Phoenicia (the modern day Lebanon).
Conscious of the crowds that mobbed around Him to be healed, the Lord Jesus uses this moment to teach His disciples. The blessings the Lord Jesus declared here are not general promises to all people. These are blessings given to those who surrender to His call and followed Him in total dependence of His grace by faith. The Lord Jesus is reminding the disciples, the Kingdom of God is for those who are poor. "The poor" are the humble folks who totally depend upon God and who know that they do not have the power or wealth on their own to provide for life and thrive. Those who are poor in this way trust in the power of the Lord and seek Him in their lives. Without the Lord Jesus Christ, they know they have no hope and no power to overcome this world. In the hearts of such people, the Kingdom of God reigns in their lives. That’s where their hope comes from.
Yes, our hope comes from the Lord. It neither comes from the world nor religion and its business enterprises. It is written the Psalmist declares: “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge.” (Psalms 62:5-7 NIV).
And I say, AMEN!
