The Gospel of Luke 6:36 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.” (Luke 6:36 KJV).

We are called to embrace mercy over judgement and condemnation!

Yes, we are chosen to be compassionate! It sounds not leaving any wiggle room, isn’t it? God affirms seriously that we must be compassionate as He is, we being His children in Christ Jesus by faith. Yes, that’s why compassion is such an important matter to our Father in heaven. Because He has been so compassionate, forgiving and gracious with us. How can we take the grace, the compassion and the mercy He has extended us and not be willing to freely share it with others? We are to manifest it. Not by way of religion nor by self- effort. We are filled with grace and will show its fruit in our lives.

It’s unthinkable not to! It is inherent in our being truly a child of the Most High God, having been born again by faith. In Christ Jesus, His Spirit now lives in us. It is no longer us who lives. But Christ who lives in us, having surrendered totally to His grace by faith. Apostle Paul said in his epistle: “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20 NIV).

In this passage the Lord Jesus is urging us, members of His body to emulate the merciful nature of God our Father. This is a call for high moral and ethical expectation for us now being reborn and walking to follow the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ. Again, this we do not with religious dos and don'ts, nor by self-effort of trying hard. This we do from the inside out bearing fruit, by totally resting in grace by faith in the name of Christ Jesus our Lord. He assures us with His Words: ““Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.” (John 14:12-14 ESV).

And I say, AMEN!

The Gospel of Luke 6:35 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.” (Luke 6:35 KJV).

This passage calls for a radical and countercultural response to those who may harm or mistreat us in this world. It challenges us to love, not just those who may not love us in return, but those that are against us - to destroy us. We are called on to love those who are actively pursuing to harm and reject us. We are to act with generosity, kindness and love, even with those who are ungrateful and wicked. This turns upside down the norms of the world that places the enemy on its right spot - an enemy! It is that spot wherein any action that it takes against a person, that other person is expected to respond overwhelmingly - “tit for tat”. In the world, the enemy must be routed and vanquished.

For you and I who are born again in Christ Jesus, manifesting this virtue of love reveals our identity as children of the Highest, for He who is our Father is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. We lend to lend with no repayment plan. This is God’s way for us to convert material things to things spiritual. Things that can be seen are transformed into things unseen. The material things that are finite are made into things infinite. Things that don’t last are made lasting unto eternity by lending to lend, not expecting anything back. Yet, not expecting for it, a great eternal reward is made ready for us, by grace, not by merit!

This is, therefore, how we save treasures in heaven! As it is written: ““Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.” (Matthew 6:19-20 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 6:34 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.” (Luke 6:34 KJV).

As children of God by grace [not on our merit] through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, we are set apart to live at a high level of virtue. We have been freely given a new life in Christ Jesus our Lord. We too must freely give. Not lend! Lending is for the world’s way of living, not for heavenly kingdom. We are not expected to be caught up with the system of this world. We must remember, we are sojourners of this world. We’re just passing through. Along the way through our journey, where needed, we manifest the character of God’s Kingdom, not by our own efforts, nor by religion, but by the guidance and unction of the Holy Spirit who lives in us (1 Corinthians 6:19). We move as the Spirit moves! (Galatians 5:24-25).

The Lord Jesus paid the ransom for our sin and gives us salvation for free. It’s a gift from God (Ephesians 2:8-9). There is no way we can pay Him back. He expects His followers, that’s you and I who are born again in Christ (John 3:3), to follow His example and give without assurance of being repaid (Luke 6:36), promising that God will reward us "at the resurrection of the just" (Luke 14:14). As Proverbs 19:17 says, "Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will repay him for his deed."

So, while still navigating through this world, we continue to do God’s Kingdom business, not by our self effort but by faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, working from the inside out. The power of His grace propels us to bear much fruits from within, manifesting through us. He promised in His Words using the analogy of the sower. “As it is written, “He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.” He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.” (2 Corinthians 9:9-10 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 6:33 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.” (Luke 6:33 KJV).

Articulating this passage, as children of God by faith in Christ Jesus, says doing good only to those who are good to us is no virtue at all. Even sinners do the same. This emphasizes the importance of extending kindness and doing good to everyone, regardless of their actions and attitude towards you, not because they treat you good. It challenges the concept of reciprocity and calls for a higher standard of love and generosity, mirroring God's own grace and kindness to the ungrateful and evil world. This continues to stress His prior command to "…do good to those who hate you" (Luke 6:27), and as an application for loving those who do not love you (Luke 6:32).

The Lord Jesus Christ in this revelation and those in prior passages, has raised the bar of work to be done, far beyond any person to fulfill. This is to make us realize that we need a Savior to fulfill these for us. And, the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished these for us by dying on the cross and by defeating the grave through His resurrection. He came to fulfill the requirements of the law (Matthew 5:17). So now by faith in Him, we can live this command by His grace. Not by our efforts and trying hard to do but by total dependence on Him who now lives us, unction by the Holy Spirit and guided by His Words in every step we make. With Him in us, Scriptures declare as Apostle Paul testifies: “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 6:32 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.” (Luke 6:32 KJV).

In this passage, the Lord Jesus, continuing in His Sermon in the Plain, gives another truth challenging the traditional religious and worldly teaching of love. This flips the world’s concept upturn. He says that it may be easy or perhaps could even be a challenge in some instances to love those who love us back, but there is no credit in doing so. It’s just a natural course of people’s enter-relational collaboration. There’s nothing special about it to draw special attention and merit. It’s just a process of action and reaction between parties - sinners or saints. Good or bad people alike, love those who love them back. And they do it in their own way, not in God’s kind of love.

God’s love expressed in the Love that the Lord Jesus extended to us is unconditional. He loves us even in our state of being His enemy. Even when at a time before we surrender our lives to His love and His grace, He loves us. Right now, whatever and whoever you are, He loves you! Regardless of our actions for and against Him and His Words, He loves us. He loves those Jews, Priests, Pharisees and soldiers that crucified Him. He loves the crowd on the street of Jerusalem that mocked Him. He loves the World! He came to die for the whole world so that those who come into His presence and believe are saved. He loves you and I, who were once His enemy while we were yet running away in sin due to unbelief. The same kind of love we are to manifest with our friends and enemies, alike.

So, now that we are born again through His grace by our faith in Him, we are His. How do we love? We love by surrendering totally ourselves to His love! He is living in us (John 14:20), and the strength of His love reassures us, as it is written: “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, apostle Paul exhorts and testifies: “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:35-39 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 6:31 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.” (Luke 6:31 KJV)..

This passage bears the fundamental principle that teaches us to treat others the way we want to be treated by them. Many in the world borrowed this timeless principle that has been echoed through the ages in various cultures and religions as the “golden rule.” In this passage, the Lord urges His disciples and by extension, we - the present day believers, to adopt a mindset of selflessness and compassion in our interactions with people around us. The message to treat others as we would want to be treated is an overarching theme in the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ while He was in the flesh among humanity. He emphasized under His covenant of the gospel of the grace of God (Acts 20:24) the core essence of love, kindness, and forgiveness in our relationships with folks in our vicinity, especially those in our immediate proximity. It prompts us to manifest from within us, by the unction of the Holy Spirit, bearing with one another, compassion, enduring each others deficiencies and generosity in our dealings with the humanity that the Lord Jesus came to die for. We are to love all whom the Lord Jesus loved.

The reciprocity core of this teaching of the Lord Jesus challenged the disciples, the crowd gathered around them and us now reflecting on this passage, to treat others with the same honor and respect that we ourselves desire. This is such a very high level of virtue to meet with, and no doubt there is no person can manifest this by His own effort, except the Person of Grace - our Lord Jesus Christ. Only in Him and through Him this can manifest through us like fruit from within. Not by trying hard to follow religious dos and don'ts. Only by total dependence upon the Lord Jesus by grace through faith, like a branch attached to the vine. As it is written, the Lord Jesus says: “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 6:29-30 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also. Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.” (Luke 6:29-30 KJV).

These passages seem nonsensical to our human flow of thinking. Our first reaction will naturally be “why do we want people to run all over us?!” We don't want to be doormats. We don't want people to take advantage of us. Clearly, in Scripture, there comes a time to stop allowing folks to continue their evil works, making us becoming enablers. That we do by being always in the safe ground of God’s presence, by submitting ourselves to Him and resist the devil (James 4:7). On the other hand, being children of God by faith in Christ Jesus, we are called to be agents of defusing conflict, instead of being a "winnowing fan" upon a gathering flame in a ruinous environment. This servile posture to have on others should not be submission to fear or powerlessness. Instead, it should be a Kingdom commitment to honor God and do what He unction in our hearts to bless and touch others.

The stuffs that we hold often have the tendency to hold and own us, if left unchecked. Hence, many people hoard stuffs. In Cebu City, Philippines I even happen to stumble upon a temple built to house hoarded stuffs. Yes we can get more attached to our stuffs than to the people dear to our lives. When our things are taken from us, we can be more concerned about the things, than we are about the soul of the person who took those things. Many families are in conflict among each other because of things they hold tight on to. God wants us to be generous with others, just as He is generous with us. God poured out His grace to us freely, so lavishly. Some people abuse that grace! Is God regretful He offered us His grace? Certainly not! He gives us grace for grace! (John 1:16-17).

Some people will abuse us too, in many respects or take advantage of us in a "deal" or in our generosity and goodness. In such circumstances, rather than destroying the body of believers in Christ Jesus, and bringing ruin on ourselves through bitterness and conflict, we need to forgive and let go of what can chain us to this world. Being tight fisted with things is not how we, as believers in Christ, are designed. We are designed to prosper and thrive to be a blessing. So, let’s have an open hand. No resistance! The Scriptures remind us: “The world of the generous gets larger and larger; the world of the stingy gets smaller and smaller. The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed; those who help others are helped.” (Proverbs 11:24-25 MSG).

The Gospel of Luke 6:27-28 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.” (Luke 6:27-28 KJV).

In these passages, the Lord Jesus continues His teachings to the apostles and disciples in the hearing of the crowd that gathered around them, in His “Sermon in the Plain”.

The Lord Jesus is the perfect example of this love command, by His life and death on the cross (Mark 15:12-13). This Love that leads us to forgive has redemptive and life-changing power. While not everyone responds to such offering of grace, many do. And, thanks be to the Lord, we do too and received His grace, the gift of love by believing in Him. Being kind in our bearing and heartily loving our enemies is not easy. Only the Spirit of God can fill us with the love that helps us live powerful lives of grace even in the presence of those who hate us (Romans 5:5). As we do rest in the Lordship of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit transforms us to become more like the Lord Jesus Christ and less and less like our self-preserving selves (2 Corinthians 3:18). The miracle of this kind of love is not about us. It is about our relationship with God to allow Him to manifest His love through us. This is about standing in total dependence on the victory that the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished on the cross for us.

Outside the example of the Lord Jesus Christ, this command makes no sense at all. But, He shows us the importance of leaving our destiny in the hands of our Creator and Father. Then, this makes perfect sense. What is the best way to conquer an enemy? Certainly, it's not to beat or annihilate that person. No! The way we defeat our enemies is by having the grace of Christ Jesus seize their hearts, having them realize the character that our King manifest through us! That's the way we defeat our enemies; we bring them to the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ, and let them be partakers with us, as brothers and sisters in Christ. That's the way we do our part. The rest, we leave it up to our enemy to respond likewise or otherwise, and in God's mighty hands we entrust them.

We are therefore to have this attitude, as it is written: “Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (Romans 12:16-21 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 6:26 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.” (Luke 6:26 KJV).

This text warned of seeking world approval. Pursuing to please people bears the risk of losing sight of God's word and promises. We ought to pose the question for whom and for what do we live? The Lord Jesus warned us of living to please people, as many did during His earthly time (John 12:42-43). He sets the example for us not to receive glory from people (John 5:44). The crowd wanted to make Him king. They gloriously welcomed His Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, crying out, "Hail to the King of Israel!" to praise Him. Then a week later, they fickle away from Him, only to return screaming, "Crucify him!" (Mark 15:12-14). The Lord Jesus didn't submit to the will of the crowd. And, so do we!

When we live for the approval of the world, we give away the rule of our lives to the will of the world. We lose the core direction in our lives. We replace the approval of God with the applause of the people, like the false prophets of Baal who led the Israelites, and themselves, into ruin (1 King 18).

We do good by grace through faith in Christ Jesus, not by self effort. Grace in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ was prepared by God in advance for us to do, by believing in Him. It is by faith resting in grace that we give glory to God. “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10 NIV).

By the example of Enoch and Noah, we do good works by faith, not by self-efforts of trying our best, which religion teaches. Scriptures call for faith, as it is written: “By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.” (Hebrews 11:5-7 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 6:25 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.” (Luke 6:25 KJV).

This verse, in the Lord's continuing Sermon in the Plain, laid bare a very important truth and warming. He is using the satiated and hungry, and the laugher and mourning analogy to highlight a sobering prospect of reversal of fortunes. In earlier passages, we watched the Lord Jesus sought to mingle with the sinners as profiled by religion. They are deprived and boxed by religion and the world in this realm of living. They’re people just like you and I before we were covered and washed clean by the spotless blood of the Lamb of God by faith in Christ Jesus. That is if we are honest about it, and we do. We’re born into sin (Psalm 51:5), the reason we needed a Savior in Christ Jesus our Lord. He is the only One who can save sinners. And, He released us from shackles of deprivation by religion and the world.

He entered into a personal relationship with them and us - to love, to redeem, and then to welcome them and us into God's family. He enjoyed partying with them, the lowly. That’s with those who are sinners, yet humble to be saved. We watched it at the banquet that Levi, also called Matthew, threw to introduce his "sinful friends" to the Lord Jesus Christ. He talked about God's joyous party for returning sinners. The lost souls that were found! Yes, He found us and now we banquet and rejoice in His presence. And, as Apostle Paul testifies: "And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus."(Philippians 4:19 NIV).

The Lord Jesus would have no part with the arrogant self righteous
and grumpy religious Jewish priests. They often display that self-satisfied posture, as if saying: “look-what-I've-done”. Their arrogance care less if anyone else is unhappy or mistreated. This shallow satisfaction cannot survive the hardships of life and the permanence of death. It is a vain attempt to escape from the hollowness of life without the Savior. Sorrow, awful hunger, and mourning await those who live such a life apart from grace, in Christ Jesus.

Apostle Paul, testifies of God’s reassuring provision of grace. It is written: “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” (2 Corinthians 12:9 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 6:24 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.” (Luke 6:24 KJV).

This passage reveals that those who prioritize and rely on worldly comfort will miss out on the true eternal comfort found in a relationship with God by faith in Christ Jesus. It is reminding you and I that our first and foremost priority is being under the Lordship of Him who is our source. This is not a blanket condemnation of material wealth though, but rather a warning against seeking ultimate satisfaction and security in it. While we are in this realm of matter, space and time, with our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ - sustained by His Words, we flourish and thrive with exceeding blessings on both material and spiritual - hand in hand. Scriptures say, those whose delight is the words of the Lord and meditate on it - “That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.” (Psalms 1:3 NIV).

This verse seriously draws our attention to look beyond what you can possess in this world. Look beyond the blessings and look to its source and seek Him. We must not neglect seeing the truth: this physical realm is temporal. This is not intended for our eternal residence. It ends, and then eternity. Without the Lordship of Christ Jesus, by grace through faith in Him, this place is the only best side of heaven a person sees, and for that person, eternity means lake of fire (Matthew 25:31 & Revelations 20:14-15).

For those who seek the Lord Jesus Christ, His kingdom and His righteousness, and receive His Lordship, all the best of this world will added on to you (Matt 6:33). The is the only worst side of hell they will ever see. And for them, eternity means living in the presence of God which the scripture assures, that Apostle John testifies: “And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”(Revelation 21:3-4 KJV).

The Gospel of Luke 6:23 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.” (Luke 6:23 KJV).

The Lord Jesus, continuing His reassuring words as we face bullying of people that hated us being His disciples in grace by faith, He promised that rejoicing awaits us on the day of His return. In the presence of a large crowd of people, the Lord Jesus continues to deliver His sermon to offer them, and us reflecting now on this passage, instructions on how to live as His disciples. In this particular verse, the Lord Jesus is speaking directly to His followers, including you and I who yields to His Lordship by faith, about the persecution they and we will face for their and our faith, and how they/we should respond to it. The believers’ response to suffering and persecution is neither one of defeat nor resignation, but one of joy and hope.

Yes, our response to suffering and persecution is not of defeat nor resignation nor surrender, but of joy and hope. This passage offers a powerful and challenging message to us all who are born again by faith in our Lord Jesus Christ about how to react to bullying by those who hate us. It calls for a radical shift of perspective, choosing joy and hope in the midst of ill treatment, and place our total trust in the promises of God. This also serves as our cheering and boosting amidst persecution because of His name, reminding us of our identity as citizens of His kingdom and the ultimate hope we have in Christ Jesus.

In the midst of it all, Apostle Peter offers us this exhortation to keep our hope strong. It is written: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” (1 Peter 1:3-5 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 6:22 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.” (Luke 6:22 KJV).

In this world, especially in this hi-tech age, people’s hatred against each other with differences of beliefs and values, have become very clear, ludicrous and unreserved. People just drop the hammer of insults and curses as casually as they would without care. And, that’s done on the web for all the world to swarm on mercilessly. When we are a target of such hate because of Him, the Lord Jesus Christ assured us - who yield to His Lordship, that we are blessed.

This alerts us that following Him may lead to animosity and rejection from other people. In this world, not everyone will accept or agree with our faith in our Creator. Many of them even believe that they're here by chance, as debris from a cosmic explosion. Believing in that, demands more faith than believing in God! But, yet many do, which reflects the enemy's control over this world. They also believe they mutate from some kind of algae, then transitioned as an ape to walk out of the wilderness into civilization to claim the label human kind. No one created them, they say. Granting that is so, that they mutate, why no new mutated being coming out of the forest anymore? What about the algae? It’s part of God’s grand creation. A designer and creator created it, which is actually so. And WE ARE ALL, as it is written the Psalmist declared: “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” (Psalms 139:14 NIV).

Yes the world hates you and I, who are born again through grace in Christ Jesus by faith. They excludes us and label us as deplorable. They'll cast us out and call us evil for showing them the truth of the Lord's holy and written Words. That’s not because of us or who we are. It’s because of the holy name of Christ Jesus our Lord who we depend on and surrender our lives to. The religious people then hated the Lord. So, no wonder that the world along with the religious people of today, hated us deeply. For the Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, we are hated. And, yes in deed, we are blessed! He is present in our midst. It is written the Lord promised: “... And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”” (Matthew 28:20b ESV).

And, Apostle Paul reminds us with his testimony that we rest in the Lord’s grace: “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.” (Galatians 2:20-21 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 6:21 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.” (Luke 6:21 KJV).

Like those people who are poor in the flesh and in spirit while in this physical realm that the Lord Jesus is addressing His teaching to His crowd of disciples, those souls who hunger and weep will have their fill and rejoicing as they come into His presence by faith.

We all hunger. Yes, we experience physical hunger. But that physical hunger should concede to a deeper truth-we are spiritually hungry for God. Being focused on the physical, we tend to seek comfort in physical nourishment to quench the hunger we feel in our souls. We tend to reject the reality that there is a place in our being that yearns for God, that craves for His presence, and that desires the fullness of His presence in us. If we admit our hunger for God and seek Him eagerly, then we can be satisfied — He will come to us and make His dwelling in us (Galatians 2:20a), as we receive His Lordship by faith.

Sorrow is inevitable in this fallen world. At a time no one expects, sorrow will touch somebody's heart. Sorrow at the physical parting from a loved one, sorrow over the evils in the world, sorrow at the lethargy of people, sorrow at the world's rejection of God and His grace, or sorrow for the persecution of being a child of God in Christ Jesus, will be remembered. God will not allow a single teardrop shed to be forgotten. He will wipe away every tear and have our mourning swallowed up in the joy of his presence and in victory over sin and death by the Lord’s resurrection. God's blessing awaits all who bear the pain of righteous sorrow.

Yes, all who hunger and weep in their lives in this physical realm because they come to grace by faith in Christ Jesus our Lord, shall have their fill and laughter through all eternity. We have the Lord’s promise. It is written: “And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”” (Revelation 21:3-4 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 6:20 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says ...

“And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for your's is the kingdom of God.” (Luke 6:20 KJV).

This passage is the first core teaching of the Lord’s “Sermon on the Plain” after He and His disciples descended from the mountain. This, He addressed to His newly chosen Apostles and His large crowd of disciples in the presence and hearing of the great multitude of people seeking for healing. These multitudes come from all over Judea and Jerusalem and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon. These group of people are not all Jews, having in the mix gentiles from Tyre and Sidon in the region of Syria and Phoenicia (the modern day Lebanon).

Conscious of the crowds that mobbed around Him to be healed, the Lord Jesus uses this moment to teach His disciples. The blessings the Lord Jesus declared here are not general promises to all people. These are blessings given to those who surrender to His call and followed Him in total dependence of His grace by faith. The Lord Jesus is reminding the disciples, the Kingdom of God is for those who are poor. "The poor" are the humble folks who totally depend upon God and who know that they do not have the power or wealth on their own to provide for life and thrive. Those who are poor in this way trust in the power of the Lord and seek Him in their lives. Without the Lord Jesus Christ, they know they have no hope and no power to overcome this world. In the hearts of such people, the Kingdom of God reigns in their lives. That’s where their hope comes from.

Yes, our hope comes from the Lord. It neither comes from the world nor religion and its business enterprises. It is written the Psalmist declares: “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge.” (Psalms 62:5-7 NIV).

The Gospel of Luke 6:18-19 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“and they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed. And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.” (Luke 6:18-19 KJV).

So often in our state of being God’s children, called as disciples to be fishers of people and laborers for the harvest, we get influenced by the system of religion and tend to adopt their ways. Some tend to think that they have the power to make people better. Not only is this arrogant, but it is also biblically wrong. The best we can hope is to be a conduit of the Lord’s grace. The Lord Jesus is the one who brings healing, not us. The power is in Him. In these passages the multitudes sought to touch Him, for power to come out to heal them all, those that are troubled by bad spirits and the sick. So, as we seek to bless others, let's always remember to rely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit, point them: not to our own work or about us, or to something in the world or about anyone else, but to Christ Jesus our Lord alone. We don't do things based on our judgement and initiative. We do things by the unction of the Lord through His Spirit in us.

This, Apostle Peter affirmed and testify when people looked to him and John after being used as vehicle to manifest healing of a lame man. It is written: “And when Peter saw it he addressed the people: “Men of Israel, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we have made him walk? The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified His servant Jesus, whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release Him. But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. And his name—by faith in his name—has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all.” (Acts 3:12-16 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 6:17 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judæa and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;” (Luke 6:17 KJV).

This passage gives us the beautiful picture of our Lord Jesus Christ coming down from the mountain into level ground. Such a symbolic display: the God of heaven step out of His majestic throne descend upon the earth to bring His equalizing message of grace and truth. He stood among us on the same ground being clothe with humanity. He became like us so we can become like Him.

So, with Him on level ground, the twelve disciples He chose as His apostles didn't have to wait long. They’re at once overwhelmed with a crowd of opportunity converging with them to hear fresh message from heaven and be healed, coming from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon. As they (the Apostles and Disciples) are called by the Master, they’re at once surrounded by great multitudes yearning to find the grace that God offered through and in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Who is sufficient to satisfy for such a challenge? None of them! None of us! But it isn't a matter for their and our sufficiency. It is the sufficiency of the One on whom we rely on that matters. The Lord Jesus in His presence equips us and girds us ready to serve in His Kingdom, being His disciples along with His apostles. He is the One who makes us perfect in our weakness to be a blessing to those who search for grace. Don't be dismayed by your lack and insufficiencies, but come to the Lord, follow and depend upon His grace to be sufficient for you. It is written, the Apostle Paul pleaded the Lord to take the thorn of weakness from his flesh. He testified: “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” (2 Corinthians 12:9 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 6:13-16 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles; Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphæus, and Simon called Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor.” (Luke 6:13-16 KJV).

The Lord Jesus Christ discipled many including women during the period of around three years of His physical ministry in this world. They were those who learned from Him and emulated Him in faith through His grace, as we too should do, by believing in Him and His Words. In so doing, though we have not seen Him in flesh, He declared: “blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed” (John 20:29).

Among His many disciples the Lord Jesus has chosen twelve Apostles - meaning the “sent out one”, as symbolic representation of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. They’re the tribes that made up the kingdom or the nation of Israel. As pillars of faith, the Apostles are commissioned by the Lord, along with all disciples then and believers of today, to make disciples of all the nations (Matthew 28:19), by becoming fishers of people (Matthew 4:19; Mark 1:17) or by being laborers of the harvest (Matthew 9:38).

The Twelve Apostles that the Lord has chosen gives a picture of inclusivity. They come from a mixture of diverse backgrounds. Their selection was guided by the Father, when the Lord spent a night of fellowship and prayer alone with the Father for guidance before choosing them. He said that all that He does comes from the Father. He does what the Father shows (John 5:19-21; 14:31).

Sadly, one of the Twelve whose name was Judas Iscariot went his way and forsook following the Lord. He abandoned faith - that is to remain and rest in the Lord’s grace. Yes, he sinned by betraying his Master, as Apostle Peter also sinned by denying that he knows his Lord and Rabbi Jesus Christ. What differs between them? Judas turned away from grace and ran away from the One who saves. If only he stayed in the Lord's grace - like Apostle Peter who remained in faith, stayed and waited for the Lord who forgives those who come in His presence. Yes, he remained and abide in the promise of His Word, as it is written: “So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”” (John 8:31-32 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 6:11-12 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus. And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.” (Luke 6:11-12 KJV).

Yes, filled with wrath on Sabbath day, the Pharisees left the synagogue, where a man with withered hand was healed by the Lord, plotting with each other ‘what they might do to the Lord Jesus Christ'. Somehow, they don’t find this act of planning to do evil as a major break against their Sabbath law. Such an impressive display of hypocrisy!

Hence, as the Lord went to the mountain, it can be viewed as a way to refresh in a place of solitude and retreat, away from the world full of the hustle and bustle of a day filled with religious confrontation and controversies. This reflects the importance of finding a quiet space to connect with God in prayer, as the Lord Jesus models for us to do. Spending the entire night in prayer, is finding rest in the presence of the Father. This is to encourage us believers to make prayer vital; communing with God in every breath of our living; and to seek His guidance with authenticity and persistence.

This also reminds us of the essential role prayer plays in our spiritual journey as strangers of this world. By the example of the Lord Jesus, as a model for our own lives, we too ought to be in the posture of resting in His grace by faith. It is therefore important that we, being children of God in Christ Jesus, have this habit of posture, that we - “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 6:10 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.” (Luke 6:10 KJV).

Now, in this passage, we see the Lord Jesus speaks to the man with shriveled hand. He looked at the Pharisees with a mixture of anguish and grief as indicated in the Gospel of Mark 3:5. And He told the man, who is now standing with Him in the midst of the congregation, to stretch his hand! They both ‘worked together’ to straighten a limb for the purpose of healing. And, he was healed! As far as the Pharisees are concerned, the Lord not only just broke the Sabbath laws, but He coaxed another man to "sin", as well.

The religious doctrines of these Pharisees’ Sabbath law, required the Jews to do whatever they can to save a life in danger as an exception to their rules of Sabbath. But, they are prohibited to deliberately take actions that result in the cure of a disease or treatment of a wound. These doctrines are unbiblical, like many doctrines and rules of present day religions claiming as “Christians” but not totally following the Words of truth of our Lord Jesus Christ.

On the other hand, the Pharisees broke their own rules on Sabbath day. After they watched this event, they left and conspire with the Herodians (the political supporters of king Herod of Antipas who ruled the region of Galilee) how they will destroy the Lord Jesus Christ (Mark 3:6). The irony is, for these religious people, plotting to kill doesn't count as breaking their Sabbath law, evil and heinous as it is. That’s how religion works to warp the minds of many held captive by it. With many more inconspicuous teachings that sound good to hear and for people to see but not of the grace of God by faith in Christ Jesus our Lord, sadly many continue to follow blindly. They fail to see the grace of God. Grace in the person of Christ Jesus heals. He is full of compassion. When He heard of John the Baptist’s death, withdrawing to a desolate place in a boat, the crowd followed Him. It is written: “When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.” (Matthew 14:14 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 6:8-9 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth. Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?” (Luke 6:8-9 KJV).

The Lord Jesus being God omniscient, knows their thoughts! He knows this people’s application of the Sabbath law is based on their own interpretation of the law, not as God provided the law to Moses. They give their own specific definition of work. The Mosaic law, itself, isn't nearly so specific. The Lord Jesus knows the heart of God. God gave Israel the Sabbath as a blessing of rest. He did not intend for the Sabbath to be used to hurt or even to forgo doing good to one another. "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath" (Mark 2:27). If a person can save a life on the Sabbath—which the Pharisees agreed to—a person can surely heal an ailment (Luke 6:9).

The Lord demonstrates the heart of God's law is grace, love and mercy, not rigid adherence to rules and regulations based on warped man-made doctrines. The Sabbath was meant to be a blessing. But the religious Pharisees turned the Sabbath into a burden rather than a blessing. The Lord’s words serve as a reminder that true righteousness is not found in outward display of observance in self-effort, but in the spirit-led motives and intentions of the heart by faith. The Sabbath, like all aspects of our relationship with the Lord is to bring us to rest with God, as genuine and authentic expression of our faith. Scriptures declare: “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 6:6-7 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered. And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him.” (Luke 6:6-7 KJV).

On the context of looking through the lens of the “spirit” of the law vs the “letter” of law, we step into these passages about to unfold in a stunning display of religious arrogance and hypocrisy. What a sad story it is, and what a waste of a wonderful opportunity for genuine worship in the presence of the Son of God. But, we see religious folks who have come with the pretense to honor God but then have a totally false agenda: They've come to be critical watchers of someone showing heavenly works. Such a shameful display of religious arrogance! They come as specimens of hypocrisy and sham of religion! Such a missed moment of a great synagogue Sabbath worship in the presence of the Messiah.

The Lord Jesus entered the synagogue to teach, as was His habit of doing, honed in on His mission to save the lost. This day, His focus quickly shifts to a man who had a withered right hand. This highlights this man's major deficiency as the right hand signifies his inability to perform essential activities and work for livelihood, being in an era of manually oriented way of living. The man is in need of healing, and this sets the stage for a confrontation with the religious leaders who came specifically to watch if He would administer healing on Sabbath day. They came to gather reasons to accuse the Lord of breaking their law so to silence Him and the true message from heaven. The same attitude of present day religious enterprises, who reject the truth to protect their possessions.

This serves as reminder for us to break from the clutches of religion and seek the truth in Christ Jesus. It is written: “So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.”” (John 11:47-50 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 6:5 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.” (Luke 6:5 KJV).

In earlier passages we witnessed that the disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ were called out by some religious Pharisees for plucking and eating kernels of corn on the day of Sabbath. In so doing, they were accused of violating the Pharisees' manmade oral law. The Lord Jesus has pointed out that according to their line of reasoning, David didn't merely break the law, he ravaged it (Luke 6:1–4).

In His response the Lord Jesus effectively said that they have abused the Law of the Sabbath, subverting God's will to their made-up regulations. He, being the Lord of the Sabbath, is affirming His rightful authority over it. He is asserting the "spirit" of the law over the "letter" of the law, as the commandment of Sabbath is intended to be. “And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” (Mark 2:27 ESV).

And the Lord of the Sabbath lives is us, being born again in spirit by grace through faith the Lord Jesus Christ. It is not a matter of place, nor a matter of day or time. We enter His rest wherever we are and whenever we do – we are at rest in His presence, as it is written: "I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." (Galatians 2:20 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 6:3-4 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him; how he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?” (Luke 6:3-4 KJV).

In these passages, we reflect on the Lord’s response to the confrontative questioning by some Pharisees who are shadowing them - the Lord Jesus and His disciples, watching their every move. The Lord and His disciples were walking through a cornfield one Sabbath day. The disciples are challenged by the religious leaders for picking grain, considered unlawful to do on Sabbath according their rules. In response, the Lord Jesus refers them to an incident in the Old Testament about David and his companions who were hungry. They ate the consecrated bread from the tabernacle, which were only allotted for the priests to eat according to the law (1 Samuel 21:1-6). The Lord highlights the preferential leniency to human needs over observance of the religious ritual rules. Noting that Sabbath is a time of rest and worship in the presence of God, but the religious priests loaded it with burdensome rules, which these fanatics that confront them are zealous to enforce.

The Lord drawing their attention to the incident with David and his group eating the consecrated bread which was a clear deviation from the established law about the bread intended only for the priests, He is reminding them and us that what matters more is not the rule. It is God’s grace that matters. We are to seek the heart of God as David did. Grace is superior than the rules and the law (Galatians 3:15-22). The law came by Moses - a servant. Grace came by Jesus Christ the only Son of God (John 1:16). And, He is in their presence and our presence too, as we give Him Lordship over us by faith.

As David did, let us therefore seek after God’s heart! It is written, God testified about David after He removed Saul as Israel’s king: “And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, ‘I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.’ Of this man’s offspring God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised.” (Acts 13:22-23 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 6:2 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”” (Luke 6:2 NIV).

In this passage we see some Pharisees acting as religious police, shadowing the Lord and His disciples. In the legalistic minds of these religious fanatics, when they said "unlawful", it meant "not right," or "not legal," or "not authorized." They claimed to highly revere the law of the Jews. In addition to the Mosaic law, they follow and enforce the oral law, which their scribes claim God gave to Moses but didn't tell him to write down. The oral law supposedly includes specific applications of how to follow the law given through Moses. Pharisees believed the oral law was as binding as the Mosaic law. The Mosaic law forbids Jews from working on the Sabbath (Exodus 31:14–15) which the religious priests relatively define according to their own judgements and whims.

As commanded in the Ten Commandments, the Sabbath was a day set apart by God for rest in His presence and worship. However, the Pharisees and religious priests made it a burden rather than a blessing by adding numerous man-made doctrines, regulations and restrictions, like this issue in the corn fields which they are confronting the Lord and His disciples.

They had lost sight of God’s true purpose of the Sabbath, which is to honor Him and to provide rest and refreshment for His people. That's you and I who are in Christ Jesus by faith, saved by His grace - not by our self-effort. Our rest is not in the day and physical place but in HIS presence. In Moses’ intercession with God he pleaded “show me now your ways”. God assured Moses. “And he said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”” (Exodus 33:14 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 6:1 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.” (Luke 6:1 KJV).

This passage describes a scene where the Lord Jesus and His disciples are walking through the corn fields on the second Sabbath after the Jewish festival of the unleavened bread. His disciples pluck and eat some of the grains, rubbing it in their hands to separate the edible kernels from the chaff and the cob. This act of eating grain on the Sabbath sparks a conflict with the Pharisees. They accuse them of breaking the Sabbath law by working. That’s how this Jewish priests view the observance of Sabbath in their set of rules. Yet, their act of closely watching the activities and every move of the Lord Jesus and His disciples could be viewed work, as well, using their rigid rules. They could be breaking their rules, too. Though the Lord Jesus did not specifically mention this action that they are doing, the Lord Jesus called them hypocrites. They do what they generally accuse others of breaking. They institute rules on their followers strictly that they themselves do not observe. Sounds familiar?

In this present day and age, we hear in the news religious leaders trusted by their subjects as they present themselves pious in public, who are accused of assaulting and molesting children. We watch religious figures, looked up to by their congregation as they teach fidelity, modesty and piety of living as husbands and wives, family men and women. Then you blink a bit, news would surface them having rendezvous with women and men other than their wives and husbands. That’s religion of works by self effort is. People tend to present in public as perfect when in reality, no one is. That’s why we need our Savior who is Christ Jesus our Lord.

We need to rest in the Lord's grace in a personal level by faith. Not by following religious claptrap. Unhindered by religious rigmaroles, we just come in His presence believing, totally depend in His grace and be feed by His holy and written Words. As we come and approach His presence as we are, conceding that we are nothing, He will transform us, not by religion. The Holy Scripture says: “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” (2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 5:39 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.” (Luke 5:39 KJV).

Luke finishes his account of the Lord Jesus' metaphors of the wine and wineskin with a statement of man’s natural tendency. Man’s addictive tendency by force of habit desires the literal aged-wine better. That’s the state of those who had been duped for so long by the old covenant defiled by doctrines carved out by religion. In earlier passages, the Lord Jesus explains that the freedom He offers cannot coexist with the stiff religious requirements of the Pharisees. He eats with sinners, celebrates instead of mourns, and treats the Sabbath as a blessing, not as a burden filled with corrupted and corruptive regulations (Luke 5:29–35).

This parable seems familiar, yet it's easy to miss its intended symbolism. Old wine is, indeed, preferred to new in the natural human desire because it is aged and better. The same comparison can't be made with the old traditions of the Pharisees. What matters here is not much on the wine but on the drinker. That is, those who are used to the old traditions will find Jesus' new ways very difficult to accept. That was certainly the case in the early church as the Jewish believers had difficulty associating with the Gentiles who followed Christ but were not bound by the Old Testament laws (Acts 15:1-35).

The passage is also worth reflecting that literal wine eventually spoils. "Bad wine" goes bad faster especially defiled by contaminants, like oxidation and improper storage. The religious doctrines and traditions of the Pharisees are bad additives to the old covenant/"wine", but the "drinkers" are used to it and have grown accustomed to the taste. Besides, the fine wine of the Mosaic covenant of the law had an expiration date (Jeremiah 31:31-34).

The old wine representing the old covenant of the law was temporary. It was given as a guardian to manage the unruly behaviors of the Jews (Galatians 3:24-25). They rebelled against God’s direct rule by grace from Egypt to Mount Sinai. They said "we will do everything the Lord has said” (Exodus 19:8). They boasted doing by themselves without God’s hand directly guiding them. Hence, God gave them the law to make them realize they needed the saving grace of God. The law was to manage them until Grace in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ is come. Hence, the Lord Jesus now is offering the new wine of the gospel of grace which they and us all need that will never go bad.

Scriptures reveal: “In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.” (Hebrews 8:13 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 5:37-38 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish. But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.” (Luke 5:37-38 KJV).

In these passages, the Lord Jesus continues with the parable of new wine and old bottles or wine skins, to explain how His way of salvation—the new covenant—cannot coexist with the old covenant of the law made rigid by religious doctrines and traditions that have crept into the Jewish way of living. As He has already explained in earlier passage, religious system cannot be fixed by grafting some of His teachings (Luke 5:36) into the old covenant of the law. His Words of truth cannot retain its purity by carving it into the polluted nature of their religious doctrines.

A wineskin is made out of the hide of a sheep or goat where the hair is cleaned, the skin is tanned and treated. The body hide is formed and sewn up, and the neck portion is used as the neck of the bladder or bottle. When new wine is put in the hide bladder, it expands as the new wine ferments, stretching the new hide. If the hide was old, it is brittle, and could not sustain the stretch during the fermentation of the new wine. That, I can attest with my short stint in wine fermentation while in the Middle East. The old hide would burst, thus ruining it, and the wine would spill out, thus it is wasted.

In this analogy, the old wineskin represents the old covenant of the law which was mixed into religion practiced by the Pharisees, including ritualistic fasting and prayer (Luke 5:33). It cannot coexist with the new wine representing the new covenant of the good news of the grace of God (Acts 20:24). In this context, the gospel also precludes mournful fasting while the Messiah - the bridegroom, is still present with them.

The "new bottles or wine skins" of this parable can also be understood as new vessels, which represent the hearts and minds of those who are open and receptive to the new message of the Lord Jesus Christ. By contrast, the "old bottles" or old wine skins represent the rigid and inflexible mindset of the Pharisees and others held captive by religion, who are resistant to change and unable to accept the new teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. In essence, this reminds us of the transformative spirit of the New Covenant through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. Apostle Paul says: “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” (2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 5:36 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.” (Luke 5:36 KJV).

In this passage, we see the Lord Jesus uses a parable imagery of patching a new and an old garments together to explain the incompatibility of the old covenant with the new covenant He offers. He illustrates that trying to combine the two, like patching a new cloth to an old raiment will only lead to damage and ruin, both for the old and the new. This highlights the renewing nature of the Lord’s ministry and the need to embrace the new covenant rather than trying to graft it onto the old.

The Lord’s new covenant of Grace by faith in Him, cannot be contained within the old framework of works by the covenant of the Law. The "piece of a new garment" represents the Lord's teachings and message of the Gospel of the grace of God. While the "old garment" represents the old covenant of the law, from which the religious doctrines, traditions and practices were carved out by the Jew's religious leadership. Those practices are perpetuated by present religious characters operating in this world. Sadly, many continue to be held captive by it.

This parable is therefore the Lord’s call upon us all, especially those who have not come to receive Him as their Lord and Savior by grace through faith in Him. Stubbornness not to hear the Lord’s call, has the danger of falling, as as Apostle Paul reminds: “You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.” (Galatians 5:4 NIV).

Apostle Paul further reminds as he personally testifies: “I have been crucified with Christ.

The Gospel of Luke 5:33-35 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink? And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.” (Luke 5:33-35 KJV).

When the physical nature of our being interferes in our time with God, a call for fasting and prayer to be in the spiritual presence of God is essential. Especially when one is strongly pulled away from God’s presence by the carnal tendency of the flesh, our recourse is to fast and pray. Major decisions and actions of significance are better done with fasting and prayers, like when Esther needed to see the King un-summoned (Esther 4:16). When God feels so distant, by sincere prayers and fasting, we can draw close under the shadow of His power. It is surrendering to the presence of Grace.

The disciples are in the presence of Grace in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord in these passages was basically telling the religious Jews that His presence meant that it wouldn't be a time of sorrow. His presence changes the dull ambience of His absence into joy. This reality and the people's recognition of this reality becomes the basis for celebration and rejoicing. The Lord Jesus was the Bridegroom the Bride had been waiting to come, in praying and fasting. Now, He has come. He is present with the Bride - the church (you and I who receive His Lordship and are born again by faith) and the disciples. In His presence we celebrate, we eat and we drink. He is amazing and divine: He is God with us. He is God who came to earth to live with His people. Things are not anymore the same as they used to be. The dawn of a new era came, and it is an era of joy, salvation, and celebration. A time to feast and rejoice.

Now, the Lord Jesus is no longer physically on the earth, there will be moments of sorrow, of repentance, and of prayer that call for fasting. But when He was present with humanity physically, there was no time for fasting and prayer, most specially rituals!  This we do with thanksgiving to draw close to Him. The challenge for us is to live in the joy of waiting in this time of dispensation of grace. We are to live in anticipation of His coming, to bring us - His church, His Bride, to our eternal dwelling. Steadfast in faith, with prayer and fasting when called for and not as religious ritual observance, we are invited to celebrate, as Apostle John testified: “And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”” (Revelation 19:9 ESV).

The Gospel of Luke 5:31-32 When God Says...I Say, AMEN!

When God Says …

“And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” (Luke 5:31-32 KJV).

No one else except the Lord Jesus Christ had ever walked on this planet without sin. All have sinned and are born sinners through the DNA of Adam (Romans 5:12). These passages provide the Lord’s response to the self-righteous question of the religious Pharisees and their scribes - the legal experts who interpret their religious laws, to the Lord's disciples: “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” (Luke 5:30b NIV). Their religious spirit of self-righteousness in their hearts numbed them from realizing that their action is despicable in God’s sight.

Using the doctor-patient relationship as metaphor, the Lord “Jesus answered them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do.” (Luke 5:31 NLT). As a doctor would to a sick person, the Lord Jesus Christ conveys the word that He positions in the proximity of sinners for their immediate access to repent and be forgiven. It is such a simple illustration for people of physical perspective to understand. People of carnal mindset often plan their setting up of residency in the proximity of modern healthcare facilities and services. Fixated to a world corrupted by sin, they always assume and anticipate to be sick. They prepare for easy access to medical services.

Hence, this analogy for sinners should have been easy for the religious priests and worldly Jews to grasp on. God is so near to come to and be forgiven. We only need to come in His presence, as we are by faith dependent on His grace. And He will declare as He did to the paralytic man. You and I, we are assured. It is written: “And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.”” (Matthew 9:2 ESV).
