“Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man? They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.” (John 18:29-30 KJV).
This exchange between Pontius Pilate and the religious leaders of the Jews gives insight into the broader context of the Lord’s arduous sham trial. It started in the garden, where He was arrested and bound by a contingent of armed men. Then slapped on the face by an officer in the palace of Annas, before being taken, still bound, to His next stop for another phony inquiry before Caiaphas in early dawn. Now, in this morning scene, He is brought as a convicted person by the religious leaders for sentencing by the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate. He is the only authority who can impose capital punishment of death by crucifixion - the empire’s trademark method of execution.
Pilate’s question show some hint of skepticism. It underscores the political and religious tensions at play between the Roman authorities and the local religious leadership. It gives some sense for Pilate to call for just and fair trial. It also reveals travesty of justice and distortion of legal processes for the purpose of eliminating a perceived threat, as demonstrated by the actions of the Jewish religious leaders.
This verse serves as a point for us to reflect on the frailties of human judgement based on precepts of the world and religious doctrines, apart from the truth of God’s Words. Without God and His Words, dispensation of justice is imperfect and corrupt. This, we see in our present age’s handling of affairs where God and His Words are evicted from halls of justice and leadership. Decisions and judgements are done driven by ulterior motives. Just like these religious leaders of the Jews whose positions and possessions were threatened by the message of grace and truth of Christ Jesus our Lord.
We need grace and truth through faith in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ (John 1:17b). Without Him, order and peace in our personal life and the affairs of the world will remain illusive and beyond reach. He is the only One who can give the kind of peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:7). It is written, the Lord Jesus said: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” (John 14:27 ESV).
