“Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.” (John 18:24 KJV).
This passage gives us the picture of the Lord Jesus Christ bound and restrained, as if He is resisting and fighting off His arrest. But, He’s not. He meekly surrendered to be taken (John 18:8). Yet, here we are watching in this account of Apostle John, the Lord put on display in a position of humiliation. This show is for the ulterior purpose of making their abuse on the Lord looks justified, in the view of the crowds and onlookers, for being arrested and accused on the charge of blasphemy as per their warp religious law.
Now, Annas is starting to parade Him on the long rigorous hours of sham trials as he send Him tied and shackled to His next baseless interrogations. The Lord’s next stop is Caiaphas, Annas’ son-in-law, who is the acting religious chief priest appointed by the Romans. It can be expected that Caiaphas is set ready, in this wee hours past midnight, to confront the Lord with fabricated and malicious accusations. Their intent is to stop the Lord whatever it takes. They are determined, no matter what, to give their evil efforts some semblance of success. That’s how evils’ work unravel. They paint illusions of success and victory to deceive people. Here, their goal is to bring the Lord Jesus to a place of mock trial in order to justify killing Him.
Putting the Lord Jesus Christ to death is what the scheme of the religious authorities is leading to. His fate was already decided when Caiaphas the chief priest made a declaration, which unbeknownst to him was a prophetic confirmation of the Lord’s plan of salvation. His death on the cross will be for the salvation of many who believe. Caiaphas’ motive was selfish and self serving when he addressed the religious Jews. It is written: “But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.”” (John 11:49-50 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
