When God Says …
“Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?” (John 18:11 KJV).
When the Lord Jesus Christ commanded Apostle Peter to put the sword back in its sheath, He is reminding him (and us) that the battles believers face are not in the flesh. Yes, we are in the world. And here, physical armory for warfare are available for everyone's disposal. But, we do not belong here. We are sojourners passing through. We are citizens of heaven. As such, we are provided with heavenly resources for our battles in this world. We are fighting against supernatural forces of evil (Ephesians 6:11-12).
Apostle Peter’s action, unbeknownst to him, was used by the Devil to stop the Lord Jesus Christ from drinking of the cup of suffering the Father gave Him. The cup was the Lord’s sole reason to come down from heaven into this world He so loved (John 3:16). The cup was the lot He was appointed to be born in order to die, so we can live a new life in Him. Scriptures remind: “For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:14-17 ESV).
