When God Says …
“I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.” (John 10:11 KJV)
The Lord Jesus continues to present with metaphors His being our good Shepherd. In this passage, asserting His divinity, He invokes again subtly His sacred name, I AM! This echoes the declaration of God to Moses through the burning bush (Genesis 3:14). 'I AM' assures His ever presence in our life. He is our Jehovah Shammah (Ezekiel 48:35; Matthew 28:20).
In earlier analogies, the Lord Jesus pointed out that the sheep only follow the voice of their true shepherd. They don't listen to the calls of strangers. Those who belong to other 'shepherd', like the religious Jews, reject Him because they're not of His flock. The Lord also said that He is the door. Yes, He is that door. He is that gate which He revealed as narrow that only a few will find. He is the gate that we must enter that leads to life eternal. He warned that entering another door, especially one wider and easy, leads to destruction (Matthew 7:13-14).
In this analogy, the Lord Jesus emphasized that He is the Good Shepherd. He is the One who cares for us. He is One ready to die for us and to gave His life so that by faith in Him we can have life. Now, in Him by grace through faith, we are alive because our Good Shepherd died, was buried to pay for our sin and rose again. He is our forever High Priest and advocate before the presence of the Father(1 John 2:1).
So, we must have this rooted in our being. “Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:14-16 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
