“Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken; say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?” (John 10:34-36 KJV)
In these passages the Lord Jesus engaged the religious Jews using their convoluted claim of knowledge of the law and the scriptures. This is to expose that, even by their own standards, they're being hypocrites. He pointed to them the Old Testament writings in Psalm 82:1-8 where those human authorities who received God's words for just dispensation of judgement are called gods. So, the Lord says, “If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God came—and Scripture cannot be set aside—what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world?”
The Lord's point is this: you charge me with blasphemy based on my use of the title “Son of God”; yet your own Scriptures apply the same term to others besides God. If those who hold a divinely appointed office or those who have a divine position in the spiritual realm can be considered “gods,” how much more can the One whom God has chosen and sent (John 10:34–36)?
Yet, the Lord Jesus does not need to justify to these people. He was giving them a leeway, sort of walk the extra mile to give them the opportunity to see the truth. The truth is, all the Old Testament writings pointed to His coming. Now, He is in their midst and they reject Him whom they expected. They accuse Him of blasphemy for revealing that He who was promised is come, the only begotten Son of God. At the transfiguration, the Father's voice from heaven declared to Peter, James and John. Hence, we too must listen to Him being His redeemed, the sheep in His flock. “He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”” (Matthew 17:5 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
