When God Says …
“Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.” (John 11:5-6 KJV).
These verses reemphasize to affirm the Lord's love for these truly believing family who have gotten hold of the truth that they are beloved by Him. In earlier verses, we learned that the Lord just got words that Lazarus, one of the siblings that He loved, was sick. The distance from Bethany to Bethabara where the Lord was, takes over a day of travel by a very efficient messenger delivering such an urgent message. His assurance that this illness will not result in death gives a comforting promise. But, there was no sign of urgency on His part to respond.
When He decided to extend His stay and delay responding to such an urgent request and call for help, felt somehow confusing, considering the travel time needed. But God has intent and plans that we can only grasp in hindsight. And, His consoling response that this ailment will not end in death may have reached to the sisters, Mary and Martha. But, they did not see Him coming. And yet, He never reneges on His promise. He stands by His Word. He magnifies His Words above His name (Psalm 138:2)! We can only trust that His delay was meant to use this circumstance for the glory of God, as it is written: “But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”” (John 11:4 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
