When God Says …
“And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.” (Luke 4:32 KJV).
In Capernaum, where the Lord Jesus makes base to set His mission in motion, He teaches many things to His budding disciples. He also teaches in the synagogue on Sabbath days, and the people were amazed at the doctrine He taught, especially by the authority and power with which He delivered His messages. The people in the synagogue were astonished not only by the content of His teachings, but also by the way He conveyed it. His words exude supernatural quality to captivate and move those who heard it.
As this passage reveals, the people were awed at the Lord’s doctrine, which coveys the message that they are witnessing something extraordinary beyond the usual synagogue expectation. This, therefore, reminds us of the transformative power of the word of God when proclaimed with authority. "Power" emphasizes the dynamic and impactful nature of the Lord’s teaching, which signifies the divine authority inherent in His Words. He's NOT teaching a religious doctrine for people to start religious establishments. He teaches the living Words of truth to transform lives on earth to be dressed for heavenly dwelling.
Furthermore, it undergirds the fact that the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ was not derived from human sources, but was rooted in His identity as God who came down from heaven to be like us. The same authority He gave us all who rely in His grace through faith, drawing authority and power from the doctrine of His Words - guided by the Holy Spirit and not doctrines of men and the world, which the Lord proclaimed as it is written: “And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”” (Matthew 28:18-20 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
