“And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.” (Luke 4:41 KJV).
This passage depicts the picture of demons and devils lodging in people’s body, they recognize the Lord Jesus as the Son of God, and are driven by the Lord to come out of their hosts. The Lord Jesus, also, silenced their declaration about Him because He does not want nor need their testimony of Him being the Messiah. It was also not the right time for His true identity to be fully revealed to the people. The imagery that this verse display shows the Lord rebuking or silencing the demons, which highlights His authority and the mighty power He wields. It reveals that in the Lord’s presence not only were physical healings are happening, but also spiritual cleansing through the casting out of demons.
The devil knows the Lord. Hence, this alerts us that not all who roams around proclaiming they know the Lord Jesus are authentic. And it is our personal intimate relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ, with Him in us, resting in His grace by totally depending on Him through faith, that matters. Not utterance of name dropping, nor affiliation with religion. An instance in the Book of Acts, some religious Jews invoked the name of the Lord Jesus, and it is written: “Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.” (Acts 19:13-16 NIV).
Religion is not of God. We have to rest in the power of His presence by grace in a personal relationship through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. Hence, we are reminded as Scriptures exhort us with these words: “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,” (Ephesians 6:10-17 ESV).
