“And when they had this done, they enclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.” (Luke 5:6 KJV).
The setting is on Simon’s boat with the Lord Jesus Christ - the person of grace and truth (John 1:17; Titus 11-13), who just finished delivering His message to the crowd in the Lake of Gennesaret, also known as the Sea of Galilee. The Lord was using Simon’s boat as the platform to speak on to the crowd who was pressing on the Lord to hear Him speak while standing by the lake’s shore. After He spoke, He motioned Simon to move the boat a bit deeper and drop the net - basically asking him to go fish again. Which Simon, a seasoned fisherman, objected at first that they’ve just been off fishing the whole night without any catch. Withal, as the Lord says so, Simon and his team did as they’re told. So, here we are, watching Simon’s team struggling to haul in the multitude of fishes in a single drop of their net.
Amazingly, despite not being the right spot and timing to fish by a fisherman’s judgement, their net was bursting with fishes that it began to break. This event should be an opener to the eyes of faith of those fishermen, those crowd on the beach and those of us who are now reflecting on this passage. In the presence of Christ Jesus on our boat of life, as we follow His Words of instructions, which may be at times contrary to our human logic and understanding, favors and blessings abound which surpass our logic and understanding.
Hence, at the right time when the Lord Jesus Christ called Simon and his brother Andrew to follow Him, their spontaneous response is made a cue for those who are sitting on the fence to come and follow suit. As with these brothers, you may be a fisherman, or a carpenter or otherwise, leave what you’re doing come and follow. The Lord Jesus is calling you along with all of us to be fishers of people for the Kingdom of God. In Apostle Matthew’s account it is written: “While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him.” (Matthew 4:18-20 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
