When God Says …
“And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.” (John 20:14-15 KJV).
Mary Magdalene, finding the tomb empty, ran to get Apostles John and Peter, who inspected the grave and left without seeming to have much to say (John 20:2–10). This left Mary alone, crying, after which she looked in to see two men (angels) sitting in the tomb where the Lord was laid (John 20:11–13). She explained her grief, but apparently did not realize she spoke to messengers of God.
Mary, was in a state of confusion and mourning, with eyes blurred with tears in a dim dawn light (John 20:1) would never have assumed the figure who stood behind her was the same person she saw mangled and buried just few days before. When He spoke, Mary did not fully realize it’s the Lord. For the moment, her thoughts were locked to the idea that someone has taken the Lord’s body. She assumed this is the person tending the graveyard. Hence she responded "I just want to know where His body is, please."
Mary is a woman of human frailty, just like us. She is overwhelmed with pain and concern, seeking to know and to find the missing body of her Lord. The kind of attitude that we all must have being followers of Christ Jesus by faith. We must remain in the posture of seeking Him no matter what our issues and circumstances are. As we earnestly seek Him, like Mary did, we'll always find Him. Abiding in His grace, we have the assurance of His Words. In the Sermon on the Mount, our Lord Jesus Christ gives this assurance: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.” (Matthew 7:7-8 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
