When God Says …
“For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead. Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.” (John 20:9-10 KJV).
The context of these verses is crucial to grasp the significance of the events unfolding this momentous Sunday. They’re in a state of confusion and disbelief, trying to make sense of what they had just seen. In their spiritual blindness [in the absence of the Holy Spirit, who is still to come, as the Lord promised (John 14:16-17;26)], they could not grip a hold of the essence of resurrection. There was no precedent to relate with, except for the miracle of Lazarus raised back to life. Yes, they knew not yet the scripture as we now know. Yet, as revealed in earlier passage “John saw and believed”. And, we should, too, being now recipient of the blessings and power of the Lord’s resurrection. We are reborn and made new by believing in Him.
Apostles John and Peter have stepped into the most amazing revelation in the history of the universe, and how did they react? They went home!? Why didn't they go out into the streets of Jerusalem and shout the good news? Why didn't they tell everyone at once within earshot that the Lord Jesus Christ was alive? I'm not sure. But it is certain, there is something powerful revolving about what they did - "they went home." This alerts us that our faith in the truth we receive must be lived and shared at our domain, first and foremost. We must live and make it manifest its fruit there. Home is where it must be sown to thrive. Faith has to be shared and allowed to flourish with the people we love and know, as well as, who know our highs and lows, and who watched and experienced our disappointments. The Gospel should start to radiate where we are. So, they went home.
This is therefore prompting us - it's time we take our knowledge and power of the resurrected Lord Jesus to home turf, first! Then, let it touch those who are in our proximity. Keeping our personal commitment in our intimate relationship with the Lord to attain the gift of resurrection from the dead rooted in our being. By His holy and written Word, we seek Him and know Him more. Let’s follow the attitude of Apostle Paul. In his testimony, he declared: “I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.” (Philippians 3:10-11 NIV).
And I say, AMEN!
