When God Says …
“And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.” (John 20:5 KJV).
Apostle John arrived the tomb’s entrance first, but hesitated to enter. His hesitance speaks volumes about reverence for the sanctity of the space the Lord laid on, reflecting Jewish cultural values of the time. He is mindful of his Master’s love. Looking in the empty tomb to see the burial clothes neatly piled, Apostle John saw that it is not a mundane work of robbery. Rather, by the way the linen clothes were set, it is a deliberate act of miracle. He recognized that the empty tomb not only exposed the absence of the Lord’s body but marked a pivotal moment of the Lord’s redemptive mission.
Yes, our Lord Jesus Christ came with a mission to accomplish. That is to redeem us from the power of death and the grave. This passage revealed that a stone sepulcher carved in a rock has no power to hold Him to go henceforth to complete what He started. When He put on flesh and moved into our neighborhood, the work to set us free was set in motion. The sight of the linen clothes lying reveals to Apostle John and us that the firstborn from the dead (Colossians 1:18) completed His mission.
The empty crypt that Apostle John saw stooping to peek, affirm the Words God revealed to the prophet Hosea. The grave has been destroyed. For you and I who are made children of God by faith in Christ Jesus, we have the Lord’s promise, as it is written: ““I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death. O Death, I will be your plagues! O Grave, I will be your destruction! Pity is hidden from My eyes.”” (Hosea 13:14 NKJV).
And I say, AMEN!
