When God Says …
“Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.” (Luke 7:39 KJV).
This passage describes the inner thoughts of Simon the host Pharisee judging the Lord Jesus for allowing to touch Him a woman they have labeled by their religious standard as a sinner. Like as if he is not a sinner too! The truth is, he is, as scriptures say, all have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). All are born a sinners (Psalm 51:5), except the Lord Jesus, who loves to associate with sinners like you and I. We were sinners too before we submitted to His Lordship over our lives. Hypocrisy, the Lord Jesus says it is. When people judge others of the things they do.
Just like what’s happening in our present day world. We witness on media, people, especially in politics and leaderships, accusing honest leaders of corrupt things they themselves are doing. Some of them enter into political pursuits for "leadership and public service" buried in debt then come out to retire with millions of net worth. Some of them navigate through their roles of trust in extravagance, building riches at the expense of the people who trusted them. Then, they ride through it accusing others of the corrupt practices, at times crimes, that they are doing. That’s what this host religious Pharisee exemplifies. And, this should be our alert to do a self check of who and what are we? Especially those who are held captive by religion and worldly precepts, it’s time to come in the presence of Christ Jesus and receive His gift of salvation by His grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9).
This passage is our stirring to reflect and know that we don’t need a whitewash from religion and any worldly form of ethos. We can be authentic and real, like this woman from the city. Let’s come to grace in the person of Christ Jesus and humble before Him. We come filthy with sins, yet He settles the matter and wash us clean. Scripture says: ““Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.” (Isaiah 1:18 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
