“Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.” (Luke 8:18 KJV).
This passage gives the exhortation of the Lord Jesus after the preceding parable of the Sower and soils. And, this does not talk about blessings and rewards for obedience. This is about hearing and understanding (Luke 8:10) the Lord's message of grace and truth. Whoever believes and accepts the Lord's message, meditate on the truth, and allow it to sink in and affect their lives, will gain even more grip and understanding. Those who seem to understand a little but hardened their hearts (Luke 8:5; Luke-8-12.), neglect to search out the meaning (Luke 8:6; Luke-8-13), or are easily distracted by the pleasures and concerns of the world (Luke 8:7; Luke-8-14) will lose what little understanding they may seem to have.
Those who have a receptive heart and abide in what they hear with continuous meditation will have more understanding and spiritual growth. While those who do not truly engage with the words of truth, or allow worldly concerns to interfere will lose even the spiritual understanding they thought they may have. It's a warning that spiritual "possession" is designed to thrive, and if kept stagnant leads to losing of what one thinks he "has". This reminds us that what God gives us to steward on, we steward with diligence to make if grow. God gives us His Words, and every blessings - primarily Spiritual and material to steward on. We do our stewardship by totally relying in grace by faith in Christ Jesus, abiding in His Words to light our path (Psalms 119:105) and the unction of the Holy Spirit guide our every step (Romans 8:14; Galatians 5:18).
God is keen on us to gain knowledge of His Words. We must, therefore, keep in mind and be reminded of the man who buried the talent or money he was given by his master, in the parable of the talents. In this analogy, the MASTER represents GOD. The TALENTS or the MONEY represent GOD's WORDS. The intended investment is continuous deliberate sharing of God's Words with those who are Lost. The investment with bankers represent interacting in God's Words with those who dwell in the Words of God or believers. His master said to Him: “Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’” (Matthew 25:27-30 ESV).
