“Then came to him his mother and his brethren, and could not come at him for the press. And it was told him by certain which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee. And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.” (Luke 8:19-21 KJV).
Here is our greatest reveal, you and I are part of the true family of God! You, who hear and do His Word, are the Lord’s father or mother or brother or sister! God presented this gift to us by His grace as we hear His Word and do it. We are as close as ever with Him in grace by our belief! The depth of this grace means - this is an undeserved gift with our grateful response in receiving. We are made God's children by this grace, and our in-depth response is illustrated by full submersion in water through baptism (Galatians 3:26-28), which we demonstrated by our actual full immersion, like the air that we breathe, in His holy and written Words - represented by the water. Then, we are to follow what God has taught us through Christ Jesus, showing we are God's children by our faith resting in His grace by believing (John 6:29). It is God's grace, not our obedience in self-effort of trying hard by religious dos and don’ts, that makes us His children. Totally trusting in Him is our genuine response of thanks for His grace. Our faith shows we are part of God's family because of the fruit that we bear and manifest, by the same faith.
So, what does your life show? Are you living out the grace you have received? Does the character of the Father shine through your rest in His grace by faith? Having been born again by believing in Christ Jesus (John 3:3), do you show you are part of the Lord’s family by how you live? We are to live governed by the Spirit, not by our human intellect and emotions. Scriptures warn that, “The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.” (Romans 8:6-8 NIV).
Hearing and trusting in His Word, we are to live and walk in Spirit by faith, not by sight in the flesh nor work of self-effort. It is written: “He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:5-7 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
