“And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him, and certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils, and Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.” (Luke 8:1-3 KJV).
These passages provide a powerful glimpse into the inner core of the Lord’s ministry and the important roles that women played in His short physical life and mission. It reminds the significance of spreading the message of God's kingdom and the vital part every believer can do to support those who are dedicated to the task, whom the Lord Jesus called the laborers for the harvest (Matthew 9:37-38). It underscores the necessity to spread His message of grace universally. He made sure to reach every soul for the good news. He travelled town after town, village after village and city after city. With the twelve apostles and group of women, and others with Him, He made it clear by demonstrating that the Gospel of the Grace of God is meant for all people, regardless of their social status or location.
Signifying inclusivity of the Lord's message of the Gospel of the Grace of God, some women are named as major supporters, providing for the mission’s needs with their service, substance (moral tangible support) and material resources. These women with different societal standing and background, whom the Lord healed from their illness and cleansed from evil spirits, challenge the traditional gender roles and cultural expectations of every era and generation, most especially our present and contemporary view of gender participation in society. We all have a role to play as designed by God. And it starts in the roles we play in our microcosm called home, in the relationship of marriage.
These roles we play in our home is vital for our greater calling of being laborers of the harvest, who we observe in these passages men and women disciples traveling with the Lord Jesus Christ. It all starts with our strong bond in marriage as husbands and wives. Contrary to some views in the eyes of the world, in these roles God reminds us, as it is written: “Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.” (Ephesians 5:22-28 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
