“Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him: but Jesus sent him away, saying, Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him.” (Luke 8:38-39 KJV).
In contrast to many other instances of the Lord’s healing miracles where He forbids them not to tell the circumstances of their healing, the Lord Jesus commands this man to go tell what happened in his life. Why command this man from whom He had cast out a legion of demons to tell, when He tells others not to speak about His miracles? (Mark 1:43-44; 7:36; Matthew 8:4). There is no clear record for the reason why. But, we can observe that only to those Jewish recipients of miracles that the Lord prohibits them to tell anyone. On the other hand, for non-Jews, like this man cleansed from a legion of demons, He commands to share the good things that happen. To another gentile or non-Jew the centurion, the Lord was silent (Luke 7:1-10).
This man wasn't Jewish and the people in his family didn't have any expectations of the Messiah. We can't be sure why. But, we can be certain of this, He has asked us all, Jews or Gentiles alike, who believe, to tell others what He has done to bless us. So, let's take Him seriously. Sit down and write up a page or for sure pages of all that the Lord has done to bless your life. Rehearse it enough to be able to share it with others when God gives you the opportunity. Then, begin to pray for God to open your eyes to the people around you who are waiting to hear this Good News! We, who are saved and endure by grace in Him, are called for a mission to tell. It is written: “But the one who endures to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” (Matthew 24:13-14 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
