When God Says …
“And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him. And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.” (Luke 8:30-31 KJV).
These passages bring up the Lord’s confrontation with a naked man possessed by a legion of demons. A legion in the Roman army is composed of 5000 to 6000 soldiers which reveals the force of power the demons that control this man's body have. The interaction also reveals the Lord's divine authority with the demons who besought in fear when the Lord asks its name. Many wonder why the Lord Jesus asks the demon its name? One can surmise it may be for the purpose of knowledge for the crowd who are listening. It is also important for the disciple and the crowd to know the magnitude of capability these bad spirits possess.
The demons, recognizing the authority of the Lord Jesus, feared to be sent to the abyss or bottomless pit which is a place of imprisonment for demonic spirits, a confinement they desperately sought to avoid. We are reminded by these verses of the reality of spiritual warfare we are engaged in, and the need for all to be vigilant and equipped with the armor of God. Yes, you and I, who are born again by faith are instructed as it is written: “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,” (Ephesians 6:13-18 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
