When God Says …
“And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee. And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs.” (Luke 8:26-27 KJV).
This is such an amazing timing for the disciples who went through such rough and awesome journey out of the storm to call port and be met by a naked homeless man. This man is possessed by devils a long time and lives in tombs. They dock their boat at the city called Gadarenes, which means in Hebrew “walled” or “fortified” just right on the opposite shore of the sea from Galilee. At times this town is referred to as Gerasenes which effectively means to drive out in Hebrew. But, it is ironic to see a homeless man possessed by the devil welcoming arrivals in a fortified place that drive out supposedly unwanted spirits. Or, perhaps, it may be the other way around?
These passages serve as an alert for us to realize how the influence of the enemy of our soul can alter a person totally for worse. We must be aware that the devil is devoted towards the destruction of all humanity. Thankfully, he is already defeated and destined for condemnation. Unfortunately, he is still operating in the world doing his last ditch effort to deceive as many victims he could. Hence, he is working hard to take as many souls with him where he is destined to be. His target is you and I, whom the Lord Jesus loved and saved by His grace. With the devil being the enemy of God, we are his mortal enemy too. He uses every trick under his sleeves and every tool in his toolbox to bring us down. Hence, the Lord Jesus reminds us with dire warning. It is written: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10 ESV).
And I say, AMEN!
